Coming off of a serious nervous breakdown, Conor Jansen began writing the songs that would later become "Water". Originally planned as a five song EP about accepting the good and the bad as a whole, heavily inspired by Emerson's "The Over-Soul," the album soon began to grow over its month of sessions, drawing influence from family illness, childhood trauma, and seeing friends try to cope with serious problems without being able to help, to say nothing of the musical influences of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, John Lennon, Julian Koster, Jeff Mangum, Adrian Todd Webb, and Will Cullen Hart. These feelings of confusion, love, hopelessness, and acceptance tell a story inspired by dreams, nightmares, hallucinations, and memories, which range from the dark and surreal to the beautiful and hopeful.
