Album
"Up in it" is probably the Afghan Whigs real first album. Coming out in 1990 on Sub Pop, it cut a dark, haunting path into the psyche of the Amercian male. Most of the songs deal are strewn together in a blistering, guitar-blaring, fast pace. I hear the voice of somebody in a great deal of pain in Greg Dulli's voice. Lyrics deal with emotions, relationships, anger, and the coming to grips with the life of twenty-something-year-olds at that time. Listen to the first track "Retarded" with its ugly words, wailing guitar, and ear piercing screams. "White Trash Party" picks up where that leaves off and displays some anger towards American rednecks in the South. "Amphetamines and Coffee" sounds like it's paying dues to Iggy and the Stooges and early punk. This album is raw , physical, and scared to death all at once. Somehow it never leaves this vibe throughout the entire thing. A band called Nirvana would take a lot of the same thing a few years later and sell out.
