"Undertow" is the debut studio album by the American rock band Tool, released on April 6, 1993, through Zoo Entertainment. The album was produced by the band along with Sylvia Massy and recorded between October and December 1992 at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and Grandmaster Recorders in Hollywood. It includes several tracks that were not featured on the band's earlier EP "Opiate". "Undertow" is the only Tool album to feature original bassist Paul D'Amour. The album was released at a time when grunge dominated the mainstream and pop punk was beginning to rise in popularity. According to AllMusic, "Undertow" played a significant role in maintaining the presence of heavy metal in the mainstream and helped pave the way for other bands to reach a wider audience. The album was also noted for its dark, haunting visuals that reflected its somber and introspective themes. As of 2021, "Undertow" has been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling over three million copies in the United States.
