From 2012 to 2014, Kendrick worked on his next album titled "Tu Pimp A Caterpillar" in reference to the rapper Tupac. Work was proceeding like normal until Kendrick took a trip to South Africa in February 2014 to perform. When he visited, it moved him so much to the point where he completely scrapped the songs from this project for a more ambitious project. That project would turn into "To Pimp A Butterfly".
