"Toxicity" is the second studio album by the American heavy metal band System of a Down, released on September 4, 2001, by American Recordings and Columbia Records. Expanding on the band’s 1998 self-titled debut album, "Toxicity" incorporates increased use of melody, harmonies, and vocal singing compared to the first album. It is primarily categorized as alternative metal and nu metal and also includes elements of genres such as folk, progressive rock, jazz, and Armenian and Greek music. The instrumentation includes, among others, sitar, banjo, keyboards, and piano. The album’s lyrics address a range of political and non-political themes, including mass incarceration, the CIA, environmental issues, police brutality, drug addiction, scientific reductionism, and groupies. "Toxicity" was recorded at Cello Studios in Hollywood, California. More than 30 songs were recorded during the sessions, with 14 ultimately included on the album. The album reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart, with first-week sales of 220,000 copies in the United States. It was certified sextuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in July 2022, indicating at least six million copies sold in the United States.
