Short Hand's second long-play, originally recorded, pressed, and released physically in 2007, takes an Olympian leap forward from his debut Good Enough. Where Good Enough was a naive, folksy bedroom affair, Toward Orange is full of confidence and carnival vibe. Short Hand really stretches his artistic muscle here, the result sounding like a bookish Tom Waits shin dig. Well-read without being wordy, the album showcases some great folk-rock minus the well-worn folkster tropes. This is a satisfying listen with plenty of quirk and charm.
