concept: bravery is San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Jared Cohen. The Trouble With Pretending is his 8th self-released album, and the first in 4 years. It presents a new side of Cohen, something more mature and thoughtful. The lyrics are as poetic as ever, sometimes childish, sometimes sardonic, sometimes romantic, but somehow always emotive. The simple vocal melodies are at times frail, and at other times stirring. Assigning a genre to the album is difficult, nearly every song is just an acoustic guitar and vocals, but they each manage to have their own personality. The brilliance of this is that Cohen has been able to carefully craft an album diverse enough that everyone should be able to find something on the record worth loving.
