Album
Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studios, Hackensack, N.J. 1955 From 1953 practically every album released by Savoy in that era included Hank Jones on piano. Less than two years later he joined forces with the dependable bassist Wendell Marshall and the always-swinging drummer Kenny Clarke and found his ideal trio. As he put it, βa good rhythm section must have the ability to think together as a unit, to all have the same type of drive.β User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
# The Trio This 1955 recording captures something essential about jazz ensemble thinking: three musicians operating as a genuine collective rather than a piano soloist accompanied by rhythm. Hank Jones, Wendell Marshall, and Kenny Clarke demonstrate what Jones called unified "drive"βa shared sense of momentum that allows space for individual expression without losing coherence. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio, the album documents a pianist in full command of his voice, supported by a bassist and drummer whose interaction feels intuitive rather than merely competent. The trio format reveals how conversation happens in jazz, where listening matters as much as playing, and where restraint often serves the music better than virtuosity.
