Recorded after the Fugees went on hiatus, the album was written and produced primarily by Hill. It is a concept album centred on themes of self-education through love, exploring topics such as romantic relationships, personal growth, motherhood, and faith. Musically, it blends elements of neo soul and R&B with influences from hip-hop, reggae, and soul, and features guest appearances from Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, and D'Angelo.
