about this album

The John Coltrane Quartet Plays (full title The John Coltrane Quartet Plays Chim Chim Cheree, Song of Praise, Nature Boy, Brazilia) is an album by John Coltrane, recorded in February and May 1965 and released later (August) that year by Impulse! Records (A-85), shortly after A Love Supreme. The sessions from February and May 1965 took place during a period when Coltrane’s musical direction was changing rapidly and illustrate a transitional stage in his work. The tracks recorded on February 17 and 18, including ‘Feeling Good’ (later issued on CD reissues) and ‘Nature Boy’, feature two bassists — Jimmy Garrison and Art Davis. This approach continued Coltrane’s earlier experiments with multiple basses, first explored in 1961, often combining arco and pizzicato playing to create a broader harmonic and rhythmic foundation. Personnel: John Coltrane – tenor & soprano saxophoneJimmy Garrison – bassArt Davis – bass (on Nature Boy) Elvin Jones – drums McCoy Tyner – piano User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
