Sometimes an album with no words can leave you speechless. Insomniasaur’s debut album, The Greys, does just that. Despite being almost entirely instrumental, The Greys speaks volumes, thudding through a soundscape that conjures images of back alleys, leaky basements, broken sidewalks, empty cities and haunted skylines; a steady attack on the core cement of an existence void of life and color, exploring all the greys that go unseen. The album produces an amazing leveling of mood. Each songs kicks, grooves, and pulses with effortless precision and taste, tapping at the back of the skull as if to remind the listener of an isolated reality of which they are already so much aware. The Greys has darkness without melancholy and energy without joy. The subtle hooks of the album pass being catchy and dig through the skin, straight to the bone. Classic Insomniasaur machine-gun drumbeats ricochet off dissonant piano chords, ambient textures, drops of water, shattering glass, and various other sounds of an unkempt world. Rocketing through long passages with growing intensity, these songs will challenge the listener’s expectations. Songs range from 30-second interludes to 6-minute meandering explorations of space. Often motifs will stop abruptly, yet again to rip back in, or songs tick away endlessly, shedding parts for a final crescendo.
