Taxidermy is an action-packed half-hour, from the frenetic "Amnesia Maybe" , via the ferocious & humorous "Godzilla 99", to the primal sputtering of "Come Again". Crammed with detail, side-swiping the hapless listener with unpredictable cut-ups, lyrics both specifically & vaguely turning on some unknowable violence. Here we have enough food, sex, and assorted exotic liquids to satisfy the most oral of obsessions. The joy of this album is the effortless variety, from the music-box "Flesh is Fresh", to the demented danse macabre of "Marmalade", to the confused & contused whirling dervishes of "Arabian Shitbug", to the early signs of the coolly sinister sound later heard in "The Circuitry". Somehow it is all as cohesive as fur to skin to sinew to bone. A personal favourite is "Wrongstep". At a relatively sprawling 3+ mins, it cycles between grim static & clear melody, between off and on, Avess's insistent vocals tumbling over the jagged edges, all terminating in the Ballard heroine careening off the overpass and into a sweet oblivion of false endings.
