Album
Part Belle and Sebastian, part Godspeed, You Black Emperor, this up-and-coming Icelandic band has hit it big in Reykjavik. Their songs have a solid pop sensibility, using strong hooks and catchy chord progressions, but are supplemented in a decidedly non-pop fashion with orchestral backings, quiet reflective moments, and thoughtful lyrics. As with many Icelandic bands, their music is inspired by the landscape around them- the bleak, cold, isolation of the countryside met with the warmth and connection of Iceland's well-connected human element. The band itself consists of ten members, with instrumental accompaniment from at least fifteen others, not to mention a choir of the same size. It's rare to hear songs with so many musicians integrated so seamlessly, yet Hjaltalin manages to do this and also never lose focus. A must-hear for music fans of any sort, especially those who appreciate sincerity and beauty in their music.
