Shine is the eighth studio project by American singer Cyndi Lauper. The album was originally recorded between 2001 and 2002 and was intended to mark her return to more pop-oriented material after Sisters of Avalon (1996) and Merry Christmas (1998). However, the project faced several delays related to label restructuring and the wider impact of the September 11 attacks on the U.S. music industry. As a result, the album was shelved and its planned international release was cancelled. In 2002, Lauper independently issued the “Shine EP”, featuring six tracks from the unreleased album, offering fans a preview while negotiations with the label continued. The EP showcased a melodic pop sound with introspective songwriting and received positive attention from fans. The full album was eventually released exclusively in Japan on September 10, 2004, through Epic/Sony Japan. This edition included all the originally planned tracks, along with Japan-only bonus material. Due to the lack of an official global release, Shine became a sought-after import and developed a reputation among fans as one of Lauper’s strongest works of the early 2000s.
