Settlement: Dallas Simpson. An early work from this UK environmental binaural sound artist recorded at Port Erin, Isle of Man, in 1996. The sonic narrative starts on the beach, next to a small freshwater spring, which is the historic site of the first settlement of people in the area - hence the title. Simpson then leads us along the beach, up to the promenade and past a hotel, where some experimental and somewhat naive improvisation with found objects occurs. We continue around the back of the hotel, again to the promenade and are treated to a meditative conclusion returning to the shoreline, with gentle waves in front and the distant sounds of Port Erin behind and around us. This was one of the first environmental works that Simpson created featuring sound improvisation with found objects and also using his prototype custom built binaural microphone rig for the recording, which was fed direct to a Sony D7 DAT, and is intended for headphone listening.
