David Nelson Ostrosser’s first-ever holiday single is a decidedly traditional-sounding MOR Andy-Williams-Christmas-special-type number, with a decidedly unconventional focus : namely, the Winter Solstice. A gentle poke at political correctness combining a familiar musical and lyrical facture with today’s modern, inclusive sensibilities, Sappy Sentimental Solstice celebrates the moment when the days start getting longer again. As we often hear, not everyone celebrates Christmas as such, but « everybody loves this time of year », as the song says. Helping DNO on this production are Ottawa-area jazz luminaries René Gely and Craig Pedersen, who took time out from their work with Renée Yoxon to create a slick and radio-friendly production.
