Album
Saint The Fire Show is the third and final record from The Fire Show, released on July 16, 2002 by Perishable Records. The band split up shortly after its release, but it is widely considered their masterwork. As such, it stands as the final document of this very aggressively experimental group. The Fire Show formed, from their first record onward, a fractured art-punk aesthetic in the vein of Sonic Youth that merged the live-sample/loop use typified by later post-rock bands, like Disco Inferno, to create an innovative sound. Arguably, they were predating other groups that would get more fame for following these same footsteps later on after the demise of The Fire Show, who languished in relative obscurity and local-scene relevance to Chicago, Illinois. Saint The Fire show is this sound at its peak - it has the best production value for all The Fire Show records, the most adventurous arrangements, and the strongest delivery from all the players. The first track is somewhat like a signpost in front of a roller-coaster telling people to turn back if they don't meet the proper qualifications; it's noisy, full of different tempo changes and sections, but is by no means indicative of the rest of the album's songs. In many ways, it's the harshest track on the record, so you'll have to wade through it first, find what you enjoy in the later tracks, and appreciate the sophistication of this song later. Consider it like a warning: this album is pretty harsh and noisy, but ultimately
