this collection of newly remastered versions (2008) includes tracks from 5 sessions by The Dunlaps: 1985 – The Dunlaps' first session was pure single-take improvised duets recorded through the built-in mic of an old pre-boombox era mono cassette deck (the deck’s motor can be heard in these recordings) in basically one continuous session: Frank-o on sax, RD on synthesizer. With a few minor edits, a bit of remixing in the beginning of ‘Abridged’, and some remastering treatments. 1986 – still improvising duets direct to cassette, but using stereo decks and a mixer. Frank-o: sax, flute and synthesizer (distorted rhythm synth in the first layer of ‘Flies’). RD: synthesizer, percussion and live analog tape looping/delay effects (Echoplex). ‘Flies’ had an improvised duet overdub mixed and recorded on-the-fly while bouncing from one cassette to another. ‘To Walk a Thousand Lands’ was an improvised duet overdub on an earlier solo recording by RD. ‘Pastoral Reverie’ was improvised in a single take. 1987 – More improvised duets with on-the-fly cassette-to-cassette bounce duet overdubs, also using prepared accompaniments to build more layers while minimizing the number of bounces (Casio SK-1 samplers’ on-board sequencers, 2 answering-machine tape loops of different lengths recorded with percussion takes were used on ‘Is It Just Around the Corner?’, and tape of spoken word with live sampling used on ‘Time of Ending The’. Frank-o: sax, guitar (on ‘It was as if we were in a dream…’), sampl
