The Hang is a melodic percussion instrument invented around the year 2000 in Bern, Switzerland. It’s the culmination of years of research and design based on a wide variety of instruments from around the world, including the steel pan, gongs, and bells. People say it sounds like everything from a harp to an electronic synthesizer, but there is no simple way to describe the sound of the Hang. It must be experienced. No one is better suited to give you that experience than Dante Bucci, a multi-instrumentalist and percussionist from Philadelphia, PA. He has been playing the Hang since 2006 and has introduced over 2 million people to the instrument through his YouTube videos. In 2007, Dante began to compose for the Hang and assembled a selection of songs to produce his first EP, “Reminiscence”. Dante’s EP pushes the boundaries of what has been seen and heard so far from the Hang. He introduces the Hang to unique musical contexts while deftly showcasing the instrument’s versatility. Dante is joined by his good friend and colleague, John Glaubitz, who blends in his own distinctive rock sensibility to create compositions that are different than anything else heard on the Hang so far. From the gentle melodies in “Evolution” to the intricate percussive sounds of “Fanfare” to the powerful lament of “Let Me Go”, it’s like re-experiencing the Hang on every track.
