“remember” is a track that was intended for Ariana Grande’s fifth studio album, thank u, next. It was teased in the music video for “breathin,” a single from her previous studio album, Sweetener. The track is believed to be dedicated to Mac Miller, an ex-boyfriend of Ariana, who unfortunately passed away due to an overdose on September 7, 2018. Mac also has a track titled “REMember,” which he dedicated to his friend who passed away. Ariana has another track on this album, “imagine,” that is dedicated to Mac and reflects many lyrics from his 2016 song “Cinderella.” Ariana decided not to release “remember” because she “wasn’t ready to share it with the world.” Instead, she released the track “break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored” in its place. On June 22, 2022, an early demo of “remember” surfaced online. Five days later, a newer version of the song surfaced, which contains a sample of The Four Freshman’s “It’s A Blue World” in the intro.
