Regina Proserpina tells the story of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, after the agreement was made that she may return to the land of the living for half of the year, while remaining in the land of the dead for the other half. The first 10 tracks function as a song cycle. Desolatus starts the song cycle off with Proserpina wasting away, alone, and sitting on the shore of a subterranean river. Her journey then takes her across the river, up a long, damp passageway out of the cavern and into the light. She walks the earth for a time, but in six months time, she returns through the passageway, across the River Styx and returns to her throne as Queen. Before Desolatus begins again, her throne disappears as if it had all been a dream, and Proserpina again returns to the shore of the underground river. Life, death, and rebirth.
