"Michael Mantra is an extraordinary ambient composer who I've had the privilege and honor to collaborate with on numerous projects over the past 10 years. His work is nothing short of visionary. Working primarily with drones and field recordings, he creates lush panoramas of sound, that envelop the senses, that always alter the listener's perception of time and space (a primary goal of many ambient artists, but something seldom ever accomplished). Also, I have never met anyone more knowledgeable about the subtle energies contained within sound, or anyone more determined to use those subtle energies for the betterment of mankind. Mike's music is his gift to the universe, and anyone who absorbs his beautiful soundscapes will experience a significantly heightened quality of life. This is the objective of all artists/musicians/writers/artisans, but it's an objective that's rarely realized once in a career, and Michael Mantra has expertly accomplished this end-result repeatedly. On a recent late-night train ride from Port Huron, Michigan (USA) to Toronto, Ontario (Canada) I was quietly listening to Michael Mantra's "A/B" CD on stereo headphones, and was startled by the way his soundscapes melded with the sounds of the train ride, and the overall general atmosphere of that night. I felt a strange weightless feeling, and settled into a dreamlike trance. "Rod Modell Plays Michael Mantra" is my attempt to recreate the sensations that I was experiencing on that late-night train ride.
