Album
Comparable in scope to Pink Floyd's The Wall, Pink World is a conceptual rock opera, though Carey's style is decidedly unique. All of the vocals, the lyrics and the vast majority of the instrumentals provided by Tony Carey himself, Pink World is the most ambitious project to have come from Carey's Planet P Project. Set in a sci-fi dystopia heavily influenced by Cold War paranoia and the looming omnipresence of nuclear war in the cultural imagination, Carey tells the story of a mute child whose stumbling upon psychic powers allows him to create 'The Zone', a shelter protecting a group of people from nuclear annihilation. Orwellian themes of repression, propaganda and a messianic cult of personality crop up throughout the album, accompanied by synth-laden progressive rock instrumentation. At one point labelled "unreleasable" by Geffen Records, the album was later released in 1984 on pink vinyl on the MCA label (to minimal commercial success, although the album has since gained a cult following.)
