(NOTE: there are at least two bands called Pseudonym. This album is by the indie pop group from San Francisco, formerly from Boston, started in 1995.) It was during the recording of 'Pig Tail World' that Dr. Rhythm quit the band. He said it was because they were fighting too much and he couldn't take the tension, but the boys found out later he'd been dipping liberally into the prescription meds. Well, whatever his reason, the group had a dilemma on their hands. They'd booked the studio months in advance and couldn't afford to hire another drummer, or to buy some drums. (Being a doctor, Dr. Rhythm was the only band member who actually had any money). So they improvised. They started recording percussion tracks with any objects that happened to be lying around. A cardboard box as a snare drum? Sure. You'll hear a typewriter on 'Accident Prone' and 'Ice & Snow'. They used pots, pans and bottles on 'Throw Some Love My Way' and 'Crashing'. Well after a couple of weeks the good doctor did eventually clean up his act and he came sheepishly crawling back. He mumbled something about needing to recharge his batteries. All was forgiven, but there was no time to re-record drums so the household objects stayed. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
