“Over the Moon” was one of the first original rock and roll bands for children, formed in 1990, by Deena Shoshkes (The Cucumbers ) and Alice Genese (Gutbank) both well known musicians in the Hoboken rock and roll scene, and mothers of young children. The band originated the “Rock and Roll Matinee" at Maxwell’s (Hoboken, NJ) & The Knitting Factory (NYC) and had a devoted following of children and their parents, who loved bringing their kids to the clubs they went to before they needed babysitters. The two mothers met in a playground and decided to start “Over the Moon.” They recruited two other Hoboken-based musicians : drummer Frank Gianinni (The Bongos) and keyboardist David Cogswell (The Minx). Soon the band was performing rock clubs, pre-schools, street fairs and libraries. They wrote and produced the theme song for a show on WNYE-FM and created a serialized radio show of their own. Featured on Japan’s version of Good Morning America, and NJ cable, Over the Moon also released several recordings on BMG kidz, and received rave reviews in Billbaord, NY Magazine, the NY Times and more. Digitally remastered, the "delightfully unsappy” (NY Magazine) recordings are now available in a digital format for streaming and downloading, User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
