01) When No One Cares 03:29 02) Last Breathe 06:31 03) Searching for Heaven 04:11 04) Numbers 05:34 05) Day or Night 05:54 Total Time: 25:39 Oil is a heavy metal band formed by Blake Nelson and ex-Dark Angel vocalist Ron Rinehart. I admit right up front that my initial interest in this band was Ron's involvement with Dark Angel. I ordered this EP without hearing a note, hoping to hear Dark Angel II. However, DA2 was not what I got, but instead a mix of heavy metal, mostly mid-paced grooves and only the slightest thrash influences. Oil slow things down quite a bit from the manic thrash of Dark Angel. This being the case, Ron is given more room to breathe and sing and isn't spitting out the lyrics in rapid fire succession. Album opener "When No One Cares" is a heavy mid-paced song with a stop/start groove and was always a fan favorite. "Searching for Heaven" is probably the fastest number on the disc, and has some thrash influences, especially in the main guitar riff. However the straight forward drum beat that never really breaks into full throttle double bass holds the song back from really being a thrash number. "Day or Night" closes the EP out and is a somber number that builds from a melancholy ballad to another heavy, mid-paced romp. The production on self produced EP is excellent, with every instrument clearly heard. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
