OK, let’s get this out of the way: We all know The Bees are from the Isle of Wight. Yes it is all very remarkable that a band comes from this island off the English coast. Yes it is amazing that a band from this quaint island is making music blah blah blah... Right, have we got that out the way? Good, because The Bees are back with a new album and it’s going to blow away all of that mainland music that is being made at the moment. While acts such as faux-American Joss Stone are busy thinking blue-eyed soul music is all about putting on a fake accent and warbling over some distinctly average songs, The Bees are kicking back in some dubious-smelling, smoke-filled room with the record player on listening to “Pick Up The Pieces” by The Average White Band and letting their minds go for a walk. These fine bearded fellows know how to make groovy pop, and Octopus is further proof of The Bees' skill at making something so retro sound so fresh and alive. To be honest, it would be really easy to criticise Octopus. I could say I sat humming “Dreadlock Holiday” by 10CC for the duration of this album, that this is another bunch of songs that are destined to become the backing for the next retro advert that hits our screens over summer, that this is all very forgettable music. I would be right, but I would be really missing the point of this album. This is music that will remind you of the best white soul music that has ever been made, this is an Octopus that has stretched out one of i
