"Notes from the Kelp" is a collection of Alex Shapiro's chamber music. It includes pieces of many moods that were composed over a ten year period from 1996 to 2006, some of which have been previously released on artist's CDs and others which appear on this Innova Recordings release for the first time. Featuring 24 musicians in varying combinations, the first seven works are acoustic, and the final track on the CD, "Deep," for contrabassoon and prerecorded electronics, is indicative of recent electroacoustic work the composer has been creating, which will be compiled in a 2009 CD titled "Alextronica."
