Album
Night Train is an album by the Oscar Peterson Trio, issued in 1963 by Verve Records (V6-8538). Although producer Norman Granz had already sold the label, he continued as Peterson’s manager and supervised the recording session, held on December 15–16, 1962. Many of the tracks are relatively short, a feature often linked to the practical aim of securing radio airplay at a time when stations tended to avoid longer jazz performances. The album presents a mixture of jazz, blues, and R&B standards together with Peterson’s original composition ‘Hymn to Freedom’. Written in 1962, the piece soon gained wide recognition and became closely associated with the Civil Rights Movement, eventually emerging as one of Peterson’s most celebrated works.
