Modal Soul is Nujabes' second album, released on November 11, 2005. It comes after what was a highly successful 2004 for Nujabes, notably producing both the opener and closer for the wildly popular anime Samurai Champloo. Modal Soul is a combination of hip-hop and jazz, and while the hip-hop influences still exist, most noticeably in the feature department, the album is more jazz-focused than its predecessor. The cast of features is largely unchanged from Metaphorical Music, but there are new ones. Terry Callier and Nujabes come together for a re-imagining of Callier's popular "Ordinary Joe," rapper Apani B delivers appreciative bars to her fans on "Thank You," and both members of CYNE appear on "Feather," the most popular track in the Nujabes discography, having amassed over 50 million plays across all platforms. Modal Soul is also the final album Nujabes completed while he was alive, as he would pass away on February 26, 2010, at the age of 36. Its influence exists today, as this album and Metaphorical Music are often cited as pioneering forces behind what's now known today as "lo-fi hip-hop." It received universal acclaim from fans and critics alike. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
