about this album

Keyboard Choir is the collective name for Ady, Alex, Guy, James, Seb and Woody, six musicians who try to make music with the turbulence and dynamics of traditional 'ensemble' performances from purely electronic sound sources and 'found sound'. Having formed in late 2004, they played shows around the south of England, including headline shows in Oxford, Cambridge and London alongside support slots with Coldcut, Metronomy, The Egg, Fuck Buttons and Frank Turner amongst others. "When we started we toyed with the idea of being a loose, random collective with people coming and going but it didn't work, it was too loose and random. We got our act together and in late 2006/early 2007 we began recording what was to become our debut album, 'Mizen Head to Gascanane Sound', put to tape (or in our case, hard disk) in South-western Ireland, and named after the area." The album is released on Brainlove on 01/09/08. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.

why this is interesting

# Mizen Head To Gascanane Sound This album rewards careful listening by demonstrating how six musicians can extract genuine ensemble dynamics from electronic and found sounds—a genuine compositional challenge. Rather than layering synths into polished texture, Keyboard Choir prioritizes the interplay between individual voices: unpredictable shifts, textural collisions, and moments of surprising restraint. The work suggests that "electronic" needn't mean cold or predetermined; instead, these pieces breathe with the spontaneity you'd find in chamber music. Their willingness to incorporate field recordings and unconventional sources creates an album that feels anchored to something tactile, lived-in. It's music that asks you to
