Jess Lipworth - Meandering Through Release Date - unknown (2008) Label - Vu-Us From the opening note of the minimal vignette 'Omnipresentation' an immediate comparison to Yokota is drawn...fifty or so seconds later a freakishly cute pano melody rolls over devine vinyl samples and miltant bassline catapults into a swinging trip hop beat and something entirely new emerges. I'm excited already...citing Krush, Boards, Manuva and the likes...and then I'm thinking, 'Is Toria Amos guesting on the piano lead?' But it's all Lipworth. It's been years since I've heard something this solid, in the days of glitch and noise, repetitive loops and the tired 80's comebacks...creative genius is back. I mean we're talking jazz, pure 90's trip - hop, early IDM, attention to detail, subliminal field recordings...perhaps one could say it's all too safe. It depends who's listening. Accidental? I think not. Sure, you'll get your buff, a failed musician who nobody understands trying to pull this apart and it's okay because part of me wants to keep something this special to myself. The other part is screaming 'order now!' I'm no professional critic, but I love music, anything good and I know genius when I hear it. Meandering Through is the beginning of something very special... **** out of ***** User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
