about this album

Let the Sun Talk is the debut album from Charlotte rapper MAVI. Released on his 20th birthday, the album was made available for download on his website on October 7, 2019, and went on to receive a wide release on the 15th. Stylistically, MAVI fits within the current Abstract Hip-Hop renaissance going on in the underground. He writes dense, esoteric verses about Black solidarity, depression and emotional trauma, over glitchy, yet delicate soul beats that give the project a smudgy, lo-fi feel. Upon the album’s release, many listeners were quick to compare the rapper’s style to that of Earl Sweatshirt, who explored a similar style on his 2018 project Some Rap Songs. Coincidentally, Earl was involved with the project, producing the track “sense.” Despite these comparisons, on Let the Sun Talk, MAVI exhibits his own distinct style. His raps exist in this formless, ever-flowing stream of consciousness, that envelopes the listener within the ocean of his lyricism.
