'Laurels' is the debut album of Sophie Janna, featuring 11 traditional songs about heavy hearts. Folk songs from England, Ireland and Scotland that are so old that nobody knows who wrote them. Although the songwriters are now unknown, the songs themselves were never forgotten, because the songs resonate with universal feelings of loss, regret, jealousy and heartbreak. That makes them all the more soothing to sing: so many people have gone through the same emotions. You are not alone. The album was recorded at Upcycled Sounds Studio in Paris by Nicholas O'Brien. Vocals, lead guitar and thumb piano (mbira) are Sophie Janna. Jack Durtnall played soprano saxophone, sang the harmony vocals and played the guitar solo on Green Grow the Laurels. Kaspar Laval played bouzouki on Three Little Boys. All other instruments were played by Nicholas O'Brien. On Green Grow the Laurels you can also hear a fish shift a pebble in a fish bowl.
