La Verdad (Machete Music) Locos Por Juana **** A major label deal can be the corporate kiss of death for up-from-the-grassroots indie bands. But in the case of Miami's beloved Latin-reggae-hip-hop mash-up masters Locos Por Juana, La Verdad, their third recording and first on Machete Music (an urban subsidiary of Universal Music), is a good thing. The exuberant edge-of-chaos energy honed by the Locos' years of live shows and communal approach to music-making is still there, but they sound clearer, sharper, more tuneful and focused. The horn section led by Emiliano ''CheFunk'' Torres punches like its got twice its three horn muscle; guitarist/bassist Marc Kondrat goes from reggae swing to rock power; leader Itagui Correa ranges into new vocal territory and inventive rhythmic variations on reggae, rap and cumbia; and the musical parts mesh in a way that justifies the title of ``urban orquestra.'' Produced by the Locos with Miami veteran A.T. Molina, plus TOY Selectah and Beatsmith, all producers with major pop skills and alt-credibility, La Verdad hums with energy and invention. Check the exuberant groove of Armando, the loopy funk of Tu Sabes Muy Bien (with guest rapper Yeyo from The Dey), the accordion yearning on No Te Preocupes. De Donde Es? (Imigrante) is a quietly urgent shoutout to the immigrant experience and pain that the multinational Locos know firsthand. The group even has the guts to cover the Willie Colon/Hector Lavoe classic Calle Luna, Calle Sol, surprising cumbi
