Implosion was the aptly titled, second full length album from A Subtle Plague, several years in the making, after some false starts and tedious interruptions they ran across while following up the momentum the group had made since 1989 with their initial album Inheritance. With addition of additional singer Ana DaSilva in 1991, the band had established a rep as a viable live act, but were broke and without label support following the unfortunate dissolution of the US side of Rough Trade distribution in 1991 due to bankruptcy. The group had kept up continuous touring during this period, finding most interest in Europe, where interest in edgy independently released American rock was flourishing. Despite being known as a compelling & energetic live act, they had run into trouble documenting the sound in the studio. After many months of self-financed studio work, and initial mixes completed in 1992, the album had to be entirely reconstructed & re-recorded when the original project's master tapes were stolen from the Komotion Studio in San Francisco where the band were based. Finally, the album was completed after replacing drummer Theo Denaxis with Sean Coffey, and in 1993, former HeyDay impresario Pat Thomas had established contacts in Europe with the Normal label, enabling the band to get these tracks slotted into the still functioning European side of the Rough Trade distribution network. Guests on the album include the Rilke String Quartet on Former Employee Massacre , guit
