Hood Poet—an acronym for “He Overcame Obstacles During Pain Or Emotional Trauma”—is Polo G’s fourth full-length studio album following his December 2021, Hall of Fame 2.0, the deluxe edition to his third full-length studio album, his June 2021, Hall of Fame. Originally, the album was thought to be a collaborative project with super-producer, Southside, however, it was later stated that the project would be solo. Following the release of “Distraction”—the album’s lead single—Polo began to tease his project as he used the tornado emoji to indicate his project with Southside. Following the release of several notable singles such as “My All,” and the Future-assisted, “No Time Wasted,” he continued teasing his project throughout 2023. However, in August 2023, posters of lyrics from the upcoming album began to appear in Los Angeles with a QR code on the posters. Polo officially announced the project on August 15, 2023, with the release of the album’s trailer; it was noted that the album’s second single, “Barely Holdin' On” would be released at the end of the week. The album was later postponed until further notice by Polo due to a “minor setback” thought to be related to his ongoing legal battle.
