Album
from late 2007/early 2008, finally a guitar heavy CD from Camper Van Beethoven multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Segel, extended solos accompany beautiful and heavy songs. Recommended if you like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Camper Van Beethoven, Richard Thompson, Can. This cd came about after the tragic robbery of most of Camper Van Beethoven's gear while on tour in Montreal in 2004. one of the missing pieces was Jonathan's Fender Stratocaster named Honey, a guitar he'd been playing for 20-odd years. realizing that there was no way in this modern age to replace an ancient strat, he became obsessed with the guitar again, and played all the time. the result was a new batch of very guitar-heavy songs, recorded with Victor Krummenacher on Bass and John Hanes on drums. a few choice guitar overdubs by Myles Boisen and backing vocals from the Alison Faith Levy, Eden Daniels, Dina Emerson and Anne Hege rounded it out. Jonathan Segel was born September 3rd 1963 in Marseilles, France, grew up in Davis, California (with a year's side trip to Tucson, AZ.), went to college at UCSC in Santa Cruz, CA, studying with Gordon Mumma and Peter Elsea. In Santa Cruz he hooked up with Camper Van Beethoven, apparently for life. He moved up to San Francisco in 1989, moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to work for Dane Davis at Danetracks, a film sound post production facility, then back to Oakland in 2001, where received a Master's Degree in Music Composition at Mills College, studying with Fred Frith, Pauli
