Hey Day is the follow up to a duo of EPs released last year, Tomorrow and Everything I Once Knew, and the album was recorded at Hot Tracks by Matt Smith here in Austin. The recording is no different from the group’s previous efforts in that Reynolds and crew dip into different territories; soft and sentimental singer/songwriter folk, animated and garagey rock and roll. There’s even a slight country influence. A handful of Reynolds’ influences are also easily discerned in the music on Hey Day, like Nick Lowe and The Replacements, who wrote a song about another one of Reynolds’ songwriting influences, Alex Chilton of Big Star. The Leatherbag tune “Forever Blue” from the new recording also name drops Chilton in a song saluting songwriters who stick to their guns and stick it out there night after night. It’s one of the group’s guitar-heavy American rock and rollers full of musical shout outs and encouragement. “Lines” settles things down a bit with smokey vocals alongside drums and a few sharp guitar swipes, but builds into clashing guitar soloing. The build and shift are represented well in the video for the song, which captures moments of the band performing, recording and shooting some hoops. The close of that song leads directly into one of the most hushed tracks on the album, “Go To Sleep,” which rarely rises above a symbol, Reynolds’ words and sparse guitar until the final beats.
