Robert Holmes wrote his first songs a few days after his 30th birthday and has been wildly prolific ever since. The Hazard Hill EP is his lament to the Ballysillan hills of Belfast, from the notorious Murder Triangle to the lush green peaks of the Cave Hill. It is a complex record with dark, gnarled roots at its base and shimmering highs at its peak. Comparisons to the bleak Americana of 16 Horsepower, The Handsome Family and Woven Hand are justified but can't fully describe how this is a record that very much belongs to the places that inspired it. This is Belfast folk-noir. Deep and engaging. This is not entertainment. The Hazard Hill EP is available in digital format from iTunes, Amazon and others or the CD can be found at Amazon, CD Baby and at Back Beat Records in Belfast.
