Glances Askances is Ruby Blue’s first LP, released here on CD for the first time - just the excuse we need to relate how it all began... In autumn 1986, a home-recorded cassette dropped through the letterbox of Red Flame Records. It was from an Edinburgh-based duo: R ‘n’ R, Rebecca Pidgeon (vocals) and Roger Fife (guitars, bass and everything else). Label boss Dave Kitson was intrigued: an impulsive call to Roger and a meeting in a smokey Bloomsbury pub followed. Soon, Roger and Rebecca, guitars in tow, were trudging through February’s snow to a small recording study in London’s docklands. Assorted friends came in to help out on various instruments - the result is here, Glances Askances. With no band and no names, Roger and Rebecca began recruiting musicians. Anthony Coote arrived via an ad in Melody Maker and Erika Spotswood came in to provide backing and harmony vocals. Ruby Blue was born. The first single, Give us our flag back b/w The quiet mind, appeared in June ’87 and gained immediate media and major record company attention. A second single, So unlike me followed in September and the LP in November. Following frantic rehearsals, a nine-piece band tentatively took the stage for a debut live show at London’s Mean Fiddler.
