Gargantua Beach is taken from recordings made from the summers of 2008 and 2009. Several tracks were recorded in part at the Castle in the Clouds Studio in Montreal, Québec, and feature guest musicians Tyr Jami on cello, Todd Macdonald on drums and gameboy (both of the Winks), and experimental Montreal filmmaker Gina Dionne on vocals. Gargantua Beach is located on the eastern shores of Lake Superior, south of Wawa. The album is mostly about summertime driving through country lanes in Ontario. It also explores the idea of parallel experiences, perceived and real; expectations seeping into memories, and vice versa. In this way, it draws from the songs of another Man meets Bear album, Bonnechere, reliving and reinterpreting music born of the same place, but at a different period of life.
