Album
From Mighty Oaks is an album from Ray Thomas together with Nicky James, Trevor Jones, Dave Potts, John Jones and Mike Moran, originally released in July 1975. It was reissued on Compact Disc in August 1989. Despite the reissue, the album remains quite rare, particularly on CD. Following the overture-toned opening track (featuring several of the prominent musical themes of the album), Thomas and James treat the listener to nine interesting tracks. "Hey Mama Life" is a contemplative piece about hard-earned wisdom ("I was once told the streets were paved with gold / now I know them for what they are"). Two other highlights are "High Above My Head," an uptempo number featuring a strong brass accompaniment and Thomas' harmonica, and, especially, the final track "I Wish We Could Fly," again featuring heavy brass backing, and highlighting (indeed, almost defining) Thomas' trademark low-key optimistic sense of life masterfully put to words and music.
