about this album

“Flowers Fell,” the gorgeous debut single by Brooklyn singer-songwriter Avery Friedman, is an ode to transitional stages. “I was walking home in Brooklyn, and I lived off this street that had trees with these insane flowers every spring. They would bloom and only be there for a few weeks. I was obsessed with them,” she says. “Then I went on a trip, and, when I came back, suddenly all the flowers were gone, and the trees just had these green leaves.” She was disappointed, for a moment. But how long can you mourn for something that was always supposed to blossom into something stronger? This botanical imagery became a metaphor for Friedman’s stage of life. Her relationships were changing, she was soon moving out of the apartment that had been her home for four years, and she was embarking on the music career that for a long time she had been too afraid to pursue. With producer James Chrisman (Sister.) and drummer Felix Walworth (Told Slant, Florist), she turned these ideas into a song that beautifully weaves acceptance, heartbreak, wonder and surrender. Inspired by the raw, open-heartedness of artists like Adrianne Lenker and Bon Iver, Friedman lets her starry-eyed melody lead the song. Meanwhile, modulated vocals and distorted guitar bursts brush against gentler and more down-to-earth sounds, mimicking the visuals of leaves and sunlight meeting brick and concrete. This first taste of Friedman’s forthcoming debut album is the perfect accompaniment to the changing of the seaso
