about this album

The four tracks on the CD represent stephen gard's first responses to studying the composition of electro-acoustic works at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The pieces reflect a progression in his mastery of skills and understanding of this genre. Gard experimented, and tried to take more control of the compositional process: planning each work, considering its form, pondering the inclusion and evolution of motifs and the placement of gesture and recapitulative points of 'narrative.' Stingle is essentially an improvisation on two synthesizer keyboards (the Roland JV-1010 sound module; the Roland Juno-6), with sampled aleatoric material added, for example, nonsense vocalisations, and sautage (sound produced by fast-forwarding a CD player while a playing a disc). Stingle is a response to the dozens of tracks which Gard had been listening to in an attempt to become familiar with recent 'computer music'. Baleani is a deconstructive reading of the Baleani Model 403BA electronic organ, a hideous instrument Gard found in a charity store. He digitally sampled its crackly potentiometers, its tawdry effects, and its pallid voices. He 'prepared' it, by partly rewiring its circuitry, and then hammered out improbable 'movie soundtrack hits' upon its unfeeling keys. The result is a short, comic, sonic essay exploring musical 'error', an aesthetic concept that intrigues the composer. Portions of (About) were used as incidental music for A Short(ish) Film About Stephen (Gard)*, a vide
