The debut album, “Fairlight,” is an atmospheric and dreamy love letter to the late 1970s-early 1980s pop era, which was inhabited by inventive artists like Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Kate Bush, who all created albums with a slew of world-class session musicians. Also integral to the album are the sounds of contemporary classical electronic artists like Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds and the songwriting of modern indie acts like Men I Trust, Fleet Foxes and The xx. While pop songwriting and unique production take center stage on “Fairlight,” a few of the album’s songs, like the title track centerpiece, are abstract in their arrangements and structure, and subvert the rules and expectations of a “pop” album. The material is brought to life by the lush performances of incredibly talented session vocalists and musicians, like Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin. Lyrically, “Fairlight” delves into themes of anxiety, intrusive thoughts and self-improvement through the character and story of Aurelius, a deep sea diver who has become lost at sea and must find his way to Eden with the help of some underwater-dwelling supernatural friends.
