Evergreen was a sort of Louisville supergroup anchored on the riff-laden guitar of Tim Ruth, with an earlier incarnation that featured Dave Pollard on lead vocals. The lineup that released Evergreen in 1996 added drummer Britt Walford, and vocalist Sean McLoughlin, resulted in a hybrid of Slint affects (Glass Highway), Stonesy vamping, and post-hardcore 1990s aesthetics. The record was produced by now-LCD-Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, who had heavy connections to the Louisville scene throughout the 1990s. Released on Hi-Ball Records, then reissued by Temporary Residence in the 2000s, this eponymous album's existence locked in Louisville's place at the top of the 90s indie rock heap. In Spano's words: "Louisville, KY, may have been the most important locale to later 20th century independent rock music -- it was at least as important as New York and Seattle." Note: The CD version includes a few tracks not found on the LP version, most notably, the seminal track, Pants Off.
