Europa is Covenant's third full length album. It was released on May 26, 1998, by 21st Circuitry. Tracks such as Leviathan and Go Film remain popular favourites and are played often by the band. Both were recorded live on 2007's In Transit live album. Go Film was also released on the "Euro EP" along with Tension. Europa marks a new influence on Convenant's sound, as the harder electronic sound of their previous two album releases is joined by strains of synthpop, that dominate on this release. The synthpop-influenced melodies themselves are catchy and are used to good effect. The heavily distorted syth voices (especially present on "2D" and "I Am") that Covenant made their trademark on Sequencer, alongside the new synthpop sound, create an interesting mix between light and dark. The deep power of Simonsson's vocal delivery adds to the drive of the melodies. This is one of the great strengths of the album. Covenant have also created the anticipated dark dancefloor track on this release, embodied in "Leviathan," which is bound to keep fans of Covenant's harder electro sound onboard. Europa is a complex and diverse album. Fans of the older Covenant sound should not be put off by the new direction that the trio have taken. Repeat listenings are guaranteed to please, as this release is definitely one that improves as you listen.
