SAD MINUET (IN OLDEN STYLE) : in memory of Edward Koehler (1948-1911) The Minuet (c2011) is scored for orchestra (or chamber orchestra), and was written as a memorial tribute to Edward Koehler, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on January 8, 2011, in Jacksonville, Florida, following a stroke. The following is a personal note from the composer: "A man of great humor and diverse talents, skills and aptitudes, Ed Koehler was abundantly generous in sharing his gifts. Born in Pensacola, Florida, he was a school teacher (music and mathematics), principal flutist in the Navy Band (Washington, D.C.), a professional music copiest, a licensed cosmetologist, a librarian and library software specialist, and a licensed massage therapist/instructor. His great, overriding ambition was to leave things better than he found them, and quite simply he was the best friend and the best person I've ever known. Following his death, the main tune is what came to me whenever I'd sit at the piano. Both the musical form and, to some extent, the scoring were influenced by an arrangement of Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits, the last piece I can recall hearing Ed perform as a flute soloist, accompanied by harp."
