The official street date of Tori Sparks' fifth studio album, "El Mar," a collaboration with Barcelona-based flamenco fusion trio Calamento, is October 16th, 2014. This album is a project that began as a curious experiment after a chance meeting at a benefit concert. Over months of rehearsals, a strange and beautiful synthesis sprang from the mix of Tori's blues, rock, and folk sensibilities with Calamento's atypical take on flamenco and jazz fusion. The bilingual album "El Mar" features several new original songs, including the title track, as well as several of Tori's compositions from her previous four albums, which have been reborn into exciting new flamenco arrangements. Atypical versions of other artists' works - including traditional Spanish and Mexican songs, themes written by Leonard Cohen, Javier Ruibal, and others - also appear on this record, making the repertoire representative of not only the group's varied musical influences, but of the strong personal influence of the language and music of Spain on Tori's most recent work. Calamento are veterans of the Spanish live music scene. They formed as an instrumental trio in Barcelona over 15 years ago, and since have performed mostly in Spain and the rest of continental Europe.
